The Gig Harbor Welcome Club started in 1979 as an offshoot of the Welcome Wagon, International (WWI). The WWI rules limited the time members could belong, but Jo Whetsell, a new transplant to Gig Harbor who wanted to meet new people and get involved, realized that once people got involved and made friendships, they wanted to continue being members as long as they desired.

Under Jo's leadership, the Club evolved, and members began forming a variety of activity groups such as Bridge, gardening, books, cocktailers and a men s group. Today, the Club sponsors over twenty activity groups and continues to remain open to everyone in the community, not just newcomers.

In 1987, the Welcome Club, along with other organizations in Gig Harbor, placed articles of interest in a Time Capsule in the Harbor. The capsule will be opened in twenty-five years.
